Find Job Vacancies > Year Abroad Placements
Most students who go on the Year Abroad go as students or language assistants where placements are organised through their academic apartment. However there are also opportunities to get work placements and unless your own department has contacts to help in this, you may find you have to do some research to find opportunities.
The Careers & Employability Service can assist you in finding something although you would have to check with your department that the placement is suitable for the year abroad as part of your degree.
You can start by having a look at the following organisations:
- AIESEC is the world's largest international student organisation, offering business skills training and work placements abroad. Through their website you will find details of what they offer in the 84 countries.
- IAESTE offers course related work placements for British undergraduates in science, technology, and engineering.
- NWSAGO is a website for students in the North West who are looking for jobs or placements either locally or internationally.
- AFS is a Community Service Programme offering placements of four months to a year in one of more than twenty countries in Latin America, Europe, Africa, North America and Asia. Projects vary by hosting country and participants interest. Projects can include working with street children, environmental issues, orphanages, community development programs, elementary schools and disabled care centres. AFS is a non-profit-making organisation so participants are charged a fee to take part.
- Council Exchanges run an Internship Scheme in the US which could be of interest to students who do not need a language element to their year abroad.
- The European Union Institutions offer a
Stagiaire Scheme which is a work attachment to one of the areas of the EU's work. These are generally 6 month placements and most are paid.
- Latin America Bureau includes list of volunteer ngos, embassy addresses etc.
- Student Jobs is the
Careers & Employability Service's own fortnightly vacancy bulletin for non-permanent work in the UK and overseas. The vacancies are targeted at University of Liverpool students and graduates.
You can search these
jobs online.
- Stage Schemes (France), Praktikum (Germany) are work placements offered by employers and are standard practice for graduates in those countries. Call into the
Careers & Employability Service for details of how to find out which companies may be offering them.
Other ways of gaining information on employers throughout the world include contacting embassies for example to get information on British companies operating in specific countries.
Finally, use the internet. This has made job seeking abroad so much easier as a quick email to a company with your CV and letter can pay off.
